One of the best decisions
of my life was to choose a midwife for the birth of my daughters
and for my personal gynecological care. I was unprepared for
the stunned reaction of some friends and family. "What?
A midwife? Are you going to have the baby at home?" In the
six years since the birth of our first daughter, I have learned
that there are two common misconceptions about the work of midwives.
The response of my family and friends high lights one of them.
Most certified Nurse Midwives (CNMs) in Pennsylvania are affiliated
with a hospital as well as a physician and patients deliver at
the hospital. After my husband and I had our initial visit to
the Family Nurse Midwife Associates (Jeannette, Pa.) in my seventh
month of pregnancy, we knew immediately that we would choose
a midwife. We would have the best of two worlds, the holistic
aspects of midwifery and the emergency facilities of the hospital.
Myth one shattered: midwives do deliver in hospitals!
The second most common
misconception is that midwives don't do routine gynecological
care, including breast exams and pap smears from the Family Nurse
Midwife Associates. I know that if there is any question about
health, I will be referred to an appropriate specialist. It was
through midwifery that both hypothyroidism and a breast lump
were detected. Thought the referrals of my midwife I received
appropriate care.
Treat yourself! You
will find a visit to a midwife, whether for prenatal care, or
routine care, to be professional. You will also find a person
willing to take the time to listen, to be present during your
labor and to answer your questions.
