What is a Doula?

"Doula" comes from the Greek word for "female servant"  in ancient times who assisted the lady of the household throughout her childbirth.

Today it refers to "women experienced in childbirth" who provides continuous physical, emotional, and information support to the mother before, during, and after childbirth.  Although centuries old, the benefits of this one on one care have only recently been documented in several studies.  The results showed decreases in epidural use, cesarean birth, pitocin use, narcotics use, forceps use and length of labor.  Since 1980 various research has proven that the presence of a Doula also positively influences a woman's feelings about herself, labor and baby.  This leads to more successful breastfeeding, fewer neonatal problems and less chance of post partum blues or depression.  Both birth doulas and post partum doulas are available.  For more information regarding doulas, please call Jan Mallack at Hearts and Hands Doula Service  724-327-6063
