Urinary Tract Infections


Symptoms of UTI

1. Burning when you urinate

2. Have the urge to urinate, but cannot, or only urinate a small amount at a time.

3. Frequent urge to urinate.

4. Cloudy urine

5. May be accompanied by a fever in some cases.

 

If you feel that you have a UTI, please let the midwife know and we can do a clean catch urine culture.  UTI's are treated with antibiotics.  It is very important that UTI's are treated during pregnancy as it may lead to a premature labor later in pregnancy.  The results of your culture will come back in about 48 hours.  Depending on your symptoms, the midwife may begin you on antibiotics before the results are back.  Please provide our office with your pharmacy information if we do not already have it, so that we have it available f we need to call something in for you.

 

To Prevent Urinary Tract Infections

1. You should urinate at least every 3-4 hours, or 5-7times a day.

2. Make sure that you are emptying your bladder completely.  You should urinating moderate to large amounts of urine with each void, depending on how much fluid you have taken in.

3. Drink at least 6 glasses of water a day along with other fluids.  If  you are predisposed to urinary tract infections, drink cranberry or orange juice.

4. Urinate when you get the urge. Do not wait.

5. Make sure that after urinating, you wipe from front to back.

6. Urinate after sex.

7. Try to wear cotton crotched underwear.

8. Do not wear tight pants in the crotch area.
