Why women need weight training

Research has proven many times over that regular, moderate strength training will provide a long list of health advantages. As many women are realizing that weight training does not bulk them up, negative attitudes about women in the weight room are fading. Weight training expert, Wayne Westcott, PHD, from the South Shore YWCA in Quincy Massachusetts provides ten important reasons to take this strength training seriously.

1. You will lose more fat than you will gain in muscle. With just strength training two to three times a week, in eight weeks most women will gain 1.75 pounds of muscle and will lose 3.5 pounds of fat. Unlike men, women do not typically gain size from this training due to the 10-30 times less amount of those hormones that cause bulking up.

2, Muscle will help fight obesity. Increased muscle will increase your resting metabolism rate and you will burn more calories during the day. Each extra pound of muscle burns 40 extra calories daily. If you just gain 3 extra pounds of muscle, you will lose 10-12 pounds without any other changes.

3. You will be stronger. An average woman will increase her strength by 30-50 percent. This makes it easier to accomplish most daily activities.

4. Your bones will benefit. By the time you leave high school, you will have established all of the bone mineral density that you will ever have-unless you strength train. Therefore strength training is a powerful tool against osteoporosis.

5. You will reduce your risk of diabetes. Weight training will increase glucose utilization by 23 percent in just four months.

6. You will fight heart disease. Strength training will improve your cholesterol profile and blood pressure, according to most recent research. In addition, your program should include cardiovascular and flexibility training.

7 You will be able to beat back pain and fight arthritis. A recent study has shown that strengthening the low-back muscles has a 80 percent success rate in eliminating or alleviating low back pain. It can also ease arthritis pain and strengthen joints.

8. You will be a better athlete. You will have increased athletic ability. Not only will it increase your proficiency, but it will decrease your risk of injury.

9. It will work no matter how old you are. Strength training is possible at any age, but it is recommended that a training professional supervise older participants.

10. You will strengthen your mental health. A Harvard study shows that 10 weeks of strength training reduces clinical depression more successfully than standard counseling did. Women who strength train report feeling more confident and capable as a result of their program
