The Blessing of My Baby
My baby's birth story all began the evening of Tuesday, February 19, 2002. It was while I was watching a movie at home. I started to get real bad back pain around 10 PM. The following day has changed my life and myself as a person for the better. It was the day of Wednesday, February 20, 2002. This day was also my due date. It was my first baby and the first girl!! As I said, my initial labor started at 1 PM. It was so difficult to lay down and fall asleep. Between the hours of 1 AM and 5 AM, I went to the
restroom at least five times. I knew something was up. Then around 5 AM, I woke up my Mom I said ìI think I am in laborî I exclaimed. Then she said "You sure?" I replied quickly ìI don't think I can wait no moreî So my Mom said to page the midwives, so I paged the midwives and talked to Sandy. Sandy told me to go up to the Birth Place. So at about 5 till 7, I got to the hospital. Gretchen was there at 8 AM. She examined me. I was dilated to 4 CM. At 10 AM, we decided to break my water, to progress labor from its slow progression. I was dilated to 5 CM at that time.

By 10:30 AM, contractions started getting more extreme and intense. By 11:20 AM, I was putting myself in the birthing tub. Then I was dilated to 6 CM. I reached 8-9 CM at 11:56 AM. Alot of my pain was cramping and back pain. Through the whole laboring, I had no medication and afterwards I had none. I was quite proud of myself. Unfortunately, I did not get to take the birthing classes, but had made up for that. I had read continuously from the library books. Many books were different with various subjects. I especially read the books with relaxing techniques. By choosing the midwives, I felt my options were open. They made me so relaxed and every thing was and went so smoothly. Gretchen decided to check my dilation at 15 minutes 1:00 PM. I was dilated to 9 CM, I felt such an urge to push. From about 1 PM until about 4 PM or so, it took me about 3 hours to get to 10 CM. Then a bit after 4 it took an hour for the crowning on my daughter Savannah Rebecca -Lynn's head. I then proceeded to push Savannah into this world at 5:10 PM. Once more words can not express how much the midwives and Birth Place's nurses and employers mean to me. The also provided me with help, support and advice. Last , but not least, just their expressions on their faces or a word to make me smile, which made my day a little brighter. Last but not least, to keep my head up and feel strong, through my trying times. Some of my favorite memories of the labor and delivery was when I was in the birthing tub and Gretchen told me to watch out not not slip and fall. I answered confidently and simply said "I won't"

This pregnancy has made me take a look at myself like I have never before. I am so sure and confident of myself now. I have also learned patience. Another memory was when Gretchen was asked by me"ìAm I doing anything?" as I sweated profusely and had the AC on between 1-4 PM, while Savannah was crowning. I was so tired and exhausted at that point, but determined. She responded softly "Yes, Jennifer, You are doing great!" I am sure I will be back to the midwives and the Family Birth Place for
my future children without a doubt.

Office Scheduling Policy
Our practice believes that your time is just as valuable as ours, therefore, unless there is a medical emergency, we try very hard to see you at your scheduled time. The time that you are scheduled for, is time set aside just for you. Therefore, when you arrive late for your appointment, the patient following you is not seen at their scheduled time. In consideration of the other patients in our practice, please contact Sue if you anticipate that you will be more than 15 minutes late as your appointment time may need to be adjusted. If you feel at any time, that you need additional time at your next appointment to talk to the midwife in depth or to discuss a birth plan, let Sue know and she will be happy to provide you with the additional time. Our practice does not double book, when a patient does not show for a scheduled appointment, the time is lost to another patient who may have wanted to be seen. Therefore, it is important that you call ASAP if you can not make your appointment, so we can make that time available to another client. Due to the increase of patients failing to keep their scheduled appointments, it will be necessary to access a fee for those who chronically fail to keep appointments.
